BUS4018S - Retail Management and Service Marketing

Retail Management

This module provides an in-depth look at the structure of modern retailing operations and best practice within the retail industry both at a local level and internationally.

A broad range of topics will be covered but not limited to:

Characteristics of retailing, the wheel of retailing theory, types of retailing, strategic branding issues in retailing, building and using retail information systems, trading area analysis and site selection, merchandise planning and category management, retail pricing strategies, advertising and promotion, electronic retailing, EDI and inventory management, financial considerations in retailing, retail layout and design issues, retail service and operations management, merchandise buying systems, and supply chain management and logistics.

Shopping has become a favourite past time both in South Africa and abroad, and locally, the retail industry has experienced a significant a boom of late. In fact, retail sales amounted to approximately R 300bn in 2004! Furthermore, a large number of marketing graduates obtain employment in the retailing sector. It therefore seems fitting that senior Marketing students study the dynamics of retail and distribution management.

Service Marketing

Distinctive aspects of service marketing; positioning the service organisation in the marketplace; managing the customer mix; managing demand; managing the service marketing system; planning, organising and implementing the marketing effort; case studies on accounting firms, legal firms, hotels, hospitals, estate agents and others.
