Prof. Mike Hart
:: Career
Mike Hart currently convenes the Information Systems Masters
and PhD programmes, and lectures on the Part-time I.S. Honours, Database
Systems, and IT in Business courses. He was previously Head of the Department of
Information Systems and Head of the Post Graduate Section.
After obtaining an MSc (Distinction) in Operations Research and a PhD in
Mathematical Statistics at UCT, he was awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship to the
London School of Economics and Stanford University, and appointed Senior
Lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Statistics at UCT.
During the 1980s and early 1990’s he held several management positions in
industry. Starting as Operations Research Manager at Foschini Ltd, he soon
became their Distribution and Planning Manager. He started up the Information
Centre and managed projects for United Building Society and Bank (now ABSA),
where he was Senior Manager responsible for End User Computing. From there he
moved to AECI, where he managed Strategic Planning, Operations Research and the
full Information Systems function for their Chlor-Alkili and Plastics Company
(now Polifin).
Since 1992 he has taught and convened many undergraduate and postgraduate I.S.
courses, and supervises research of postgraduates to PhD level. He convened the
full-time IS Honours course for ten years, and has given both full-time and
part-time MBA I.S. modules for the UCT Graduate School of Business. He has many
accredited local and international publications and has spoken at and chaired
sessions at many international conferences.
His major research themes have involved the adoption and
strategic use of information technologies and systems in organizations;
management and decision-support use of I.S. (data mining, knowledge
management, CRM, OLAP, business intelligence etc.); key I.S. management
issues; and ICT and the digital divide. He is a Research Associate of
CITANDA (the Centre for IT and National Development in Africa). As a
consultant he has been strongly involved in planning and analyzing
questionnaire surveys, providing statistical analysis and forecasting, and
advising on information systems and logistics for educational institutions,
professional bodies and commercial organizations.
Mike Hart is a National Research Foundation-rated
researcher and is currently undertaking a 3 year NRF-supported project into
“Customer Service Delivery in Contact Centres”, with an emphasis on the
effective use of customer information systems and integration of information
across channels.
He is an Editor for The Journal of I.T. Education (JITE),
on the International Review Board of the Journal of I.T. Case and
Applications Research (JITCAR), and on the Editorial Board of the Electronic
Journal of Business Research Methods (EJBRM).
When not working he enjoys running, gym, hiking,
longboarding, films and wine.
