Systems & Procedures Office Manager, UCT, 1998-2002

The Systems and Procedures Office was set up in part as being responsible for co-ordination and project management of the Universitys R/3 implementations.  Some S&P Office responsibilities included:

  • Managing SAP R/3 upgrades and the development and implementation of new R/3 functionality

  • Re-engineering business procedures in administrative and support departments

  • Performing administrative functions such as administering over 2000 SAP R/3 users and maintaining purchasing and sales organizational data.

  • Compiling and updating on-line HTML Help and forms and ensuring that the quality of administrative forms, R/3 training, procedures and Help Desk support was maintained.

  • Owning and supporting core central modules such as EIS (Executive Information Systems).

Large projects project managed included:

  • Upgrading the Universitys SAP R/3 version to 4.5B during 1999 and to 4.6C during 2001.  This involved managing the technical upgrade, testing, technical fixes, liaising with SAP, user training, business procedure changes, communications and system downtime.

  • Managing the 1998 fiscal year-end combined with the R/3 data element changes needed because of faculty restructuring where the number of faculties reduced from 11 to 7.

Was elected onto and served on the SAP Higher Education and Research User Group Executive Committee from 2000 to 2002 with the portfolio of managing development requests from the international user group to SAP.

SAP R/3 Training Manager, PRISM Project, UCT, 1996-1998

Joined the SAP R/3 implementation project (PRISM) as the training manager when the project started.  In this capacity planned, coordinated, managed and performed: the training of all staff in all modules of R/3 being implemented, the support of all users through a central Help Desk, the upgrading of staff PCs, the testing of all R/3 procedures, the documentation of R/3 procedures and administrative forms, the compiling of user procedures into on-line Help and the maintenance of the relevant R/3 tables to allow for context sensitive Help linkage. This position had a large change management component.

Computer Support and Training, IT Department, UCT, 1994-1996

During my PhD, was employed by the Information Technology Services Department, initially on a part-time basis providing first line telephonic computer support to all staff and postgraduate students.  Joined the Department on a full-time basis in 1995 as a Consultant.  During this employ was the primary support person for database problems and a network supervisor.  Courses presented for staff included: Introduction to Networks and using Electronic Mail, Introduction to VMS, Introduction to Paradox and Introduction to Microsoft Access.
