TUFFER PUFFER 2003

Tuffer Puffer 2003 is on and will again be held in conjunction with the Puffer.

Its a tough and exhilarating race, combining trail running with a challenging road section.

More information can be obtained from the organisers, however the normal Puffer entry form needs to be completed together with the information requested below.

Requirements and Rules:

The Tuffer Puffer is an extreme event - it is very demanding and there is a serious risk of getting lost, injured or worse particularly in bad weather that is likely during August.
Only runners with real ultra experience will be allowed to run - runners will have most likely run at least the Puffer, or the Sky Run or Amatola trail or equivalent (or the Tuffer Puffer of course)
Race Organisers decisions must be obeyed. The organisers accept the need for the minimum number of rules unlike most running events. However they will make decisions in the interest of the future of the race. An assessment of all runners will be done at Constantia Nek prior to the last section of the race. Runners in poor condition will not be allowed to continue. A cut-off time of 14h00 will be strictly enforced.
There is a cut off of 38 hours provided that runners who are still running after 19h00 are in direct contact with the organisers by cell phone and advise progress. Their condition may be reviewed from time to time and if necessary they may be withdrawn from the race. This is a strict rule
Runners must be self-sufficient. Thats the point of the race. The race organisers provide no refreshments particularly on the first half and the night section - (although the Puffer refreshment points will provide sustenance on day two). Runners must carry their own food, water, clothing in which case the organisers will need to have proof that this is sufficient. Otherwise seconds need to be provided.

Note: seconding is a demanding because to the length of the race - therefore at least two seconds are preferable

Runners must know the route or run with someone who knows and must have or share a cell phone
Runners or potential entrants comments and feedback are welcome particularly if they help make this an even better event.
Runners should consider buying the book Mystical Miles: Running Living Beaming by Paul Vorwerk which will be available to them at a special discount from the Organiser and they should tell other runners about it J

Required Equipment:

A cell phone (or being running with someone who has one)
Adequate lighting for night running
Aa waterproof map of the route and a compass
Cold running gear: top and bottom, waterproof top and bottom
Space blanket/emergency bag and a whistle
Containers to carry water for at least 20 km (2 litres is a suggestion as there is water at various points)

Start:

Runners must check in on Friday 10 August 2000 at Ferrymans, in the Waterfront at 9h30 am and start at 10h00.

Runners of proven ability, at the organisers sole discretion will be able start at a later time. Critical to this decision will be an assessment as to whether the runner will make the Constantia Nek cut-off.

The Race Timer and judge will record starting and finish times.

Route:

The route will be an exact duplicate of the Puffer, the first half being a reverse of the normal route.

The route will not be marked - markers get lost or turned participants must know where they are going. Therefore if you dont know the route, run with someone who does.

Check Points:

The race, because it caters for real runners, relies on runners honour as a check on the full completion of the course.

However check points may be established with a clip or stamp system.

Entry to Cape Point

Entry of vehicles into the Cape Point Nature reserve is very sensitive and is being negotiated. Most likely there will be a restriction on the number of vehicles if any that may proceed to the turn point especially during the night. Runners should be prepared to run the 24 km loop in and out without seconding. For many of us the quiet and not having to smell petrol fumes is in any event a bonus.

Trophy:

A unique Puffer trophy will be given to finishers plus a medal and certificate

Indemnity waiver

Runner must complete the following:

  1. Sign an indemnity (to be handed in before the start)
  2. I .. hereby acknowledge that :

The Organisers, Sponsors and FHAC do NOT accept ANY RESPONSIBILITY for
anything that might or might not happen to me before, during or
after the run.  I run this entirely under my own responsibility; knowing that I have to provide for myself and take car of my own needs. I understand that this race is potentially very dangerous, especially in adverse weather conditions. Many lives, including those
of experienced hikers, have been lost on the Peninsula's mountains and
Table Mountain in particular. I have therefore planned properly for this event and will carry enough carry equipment and supplies to get me through the run even should I get stuck overnight on the mountain.
