Dear Member,
The shareware market place is, like the entire software
industry, in turmoil and constantly changing. Unfortunately, this also affects
your Joint Software Exchange, the longest established shareware
distributor on the African continent. (Upgrading our earlier claim to be the
longest established in Southern Africa ;-). In short, we are having to scale
down our operations because of the significant cost increases: the two main
culprits are the sharp increases in printing costs (paper alone almost doubled
in price during the last year) and the unrelenting rise in postage. We have
tried to find a compromise between your needs, my personal time constraints and
the JSE's limited financial resources.
The main changes are the following:
* The JSE will no longer have
"office hours" and most orders will be dealt with on a "mail-order
only" basis. We will not be able to provide disks for visitors to our
premises (since usually no one will be at home). For large (faxed)
orders (exceeding R100) indicating a telephone number & contact person, we
may be able to provide a "collect/pick-up" arrangement i.e. we will
phone you when the order is ready to be picked up but with a very specific
time.
*
We will probably discontinue the
bulletin board service since I do not have the personal time and expertise
available to maintain it.
* Our Shwareware Magazine will be
a bit smaller and without cover so as to save printing and postage costs.
However, we will continue
to provide current members (and, to a lesser extent, current non-member
customers) with quarterly/tri-annual software updates; you will always be able
to order-by-fax; our prices remain as they are; we will still source virtually any
non-catalogue listed shareware you have heard about (we generally need the name
& brief description) and we hope to keep our turn-around time as efficient
as possible. Our "not happy - refund or exchange" policy also
still stands, of course, though technical queries will (still) only be answered
on a "when time allows" basis.
Enjoy your reading!

[Ed: One of our members
sent us this gem - I couldn't resist publishing it...]
Dear Jean-Paul,
As a teacher of computer
literacy in a high school in Johannesburg, I thought I would share with you
some of the insights I learnt from my pupils after a recent class test.
On the subject of magnetic
disks
1) Floppies have less memory than stiffies
and stiffies have less momory than hardies.
2) Floppy disks are floppy and bigger than
stiffy disks which are small and stiff.
3) A floppy has a poor memory. A Stiffy
has a better memory but a hard disk has the best memory of all.
4) If you put a disk in upside down, you
will loose your memory.
5) Floppy disk are longer, wider and
thinner than stiffies, which are short, fat and small.
6) Information is taken out of the
diskette by means of an electro-magnet. If you were to insert the diskette
upside down, the data won't be pulled out of the disk, but pushed down.
7) We save our work to disk so that our
pains taking time is still there and not lost.
The subject of the pentium
bug caused a lot of interest.
1) Pentium people aren't technically
minded.
2) The Pentium were not allway exactely
write.
3) The Pentium chiphad a floor in it.
4) The Pentium is almost perfect. It is
the best of the best. But it isn't perfect.
5) Intel were not quite there with their
Pentium design.
Some interesting points
were made about units of measurement.
1) We use bites to measure the size of a
hard drive.
2) Memory is measured in "Killer
bytes" and "Mega bites".
3) Clock speed is measured in "mega
hurts" or "mega hearts".
It was felt by one lad that
"all starf should use the computers" but I think the whole exercise
was summarized by another lad who stated that "there are some dum people
in this world".
Thank you for all you are
doing to make software affordable. Also for your very professional catalogue I
recently received in the post.
Regards
Steve Eilertsen.
Testing for a

uncover the Pentium bug if you have it. This test was used in Excel spreadsheet

Bigger Hardrive Means
Bigger Appetite
Did you just buy and
install a BIG hard disk? You probably took the easy route and partitioned it as
one whole physical drive, right? Did you know that a large partition on a hard
disk is one of the biggest waste of hard disk space?
Here is a simple chart of
space used by each cluster in relation to the actual size of the Hard Drive
itself.
Size of Partition in MB Size of Cluster in
Kbytes
16 - 127.99 2
128 - 255.99 4
256 - 511.99 8
512 - 1023.99 16
1024 and greater ??
Where the waste comes in
are those files that are smaller that the size of each individual cluster. Have
you ever considered how many files you have that are that small? As the MB
partitioning increase, the amount of wasted disk space increases because those
sall files are going to consume the next largest cluster size.
As an example ... the
majority of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files are probably under 1K. If these
two files were on a partitioned drive of 420MB, those two files would consume
16K of disk space even though together they are less than 2K in size.
I guess the answer to the
question is the effort worth it?!? Breaking down your large hard drive after
it's in use could involve fooling with several drives to move between during
each operation; starting the backup programs again and again when the tape has
finished with one drive and trying to keep track of the tapes; or worse yet
using a "million" floppies. And having compressed drives can only
complicate the situation.
The choice is yours!
* Bill Gaston @ 1:382/91
Sluggish Compression?
If you have a 386 or
faster, and are using DoubleSpace, you can speed things up a little bit. First,
type "DBLSPACE /INFO" to locate the uncompressed drive containing the
compressed file DBLSPACE.000. Go to the root directory of that drive and type
"ATTRIB -S -H -R DBLSPACE.INI". Now edit DBLSPACE.INI and add
"Enable386=1" as it's own line. Save and exit the editor and at the
prompt type "ATTRIB +S +H +R DBLSPACE.INI". Reboot for the change to
take effect.
* PC Computing - August
1994
This has been tested with
the new DriveSpace (DOS 6.22) and appears to work just fine. Simply substitute
"DRVSPACE.*" with "DBLSPACE.*" in the example above.
