minimum machine requirements for the use of the CD-ROM are - a CD ROM
reader, a 486 or later machine. Network versions are available at special
request and quotation. The book will be a normal reference volume
Key features
The most current and comprehensive reference of this type currently
available, on interactive CD-ROM with definitive text, up-to-date
descriptions and linked illustrative material.
S I units are used throughout the work
IUPAC names are used for chemicals in all but a very few cases.
Alternative names that are in common use will be given as headwords
with a link to the IUPAC name.
Every effort has been made to enable the student to have fast easy
access to simple definition while maintaining a high academic and
scientific standard.
This new Science & Technology Resource is an essential companion
for all students of science and enthusiasts. Ideally suited to the needs
of a particular specialist who needs information on a wide area of
science. With CD ROM, students may 'tag & paste' headwords they
refer to, to incorporate this information into their work. They may not
copy sections of the disc.
Description
This resource has been specially prepared for students studying Biology,
Chemistry, General Science, Physical Science and Physics. It is the result
of a careful analysis of the needs of people studying science at secondary,
further education and tertiary level, as well as the important area of
in-service training and reference in industry. It will prove an invaluable
aid to students' every-day learning and reference needs and examination
preparation.
As well as containing definitions of the terms used in the sciences
mentioned, with illustrations where appropriate, the resource contains many
terms used in agricultural, astronomical computing environmental, geological
and medical sciences.
As a truly useful referencing tool it is extremely difficult to limit the
contents of such a resource to a single educational grade or level, many
headwords are included that are used in higher level study i.e. post school.
Some headwords are included that are not strictly scientific but they are
there as they occur in every-day usage in scientific terminology.
In the CD-ROM, a headword will be indicated, as in a paper dictionary. In
addition any word which occurs in the definition that is also a headword
elsewhere, will be indicated as a link on which one may 'click' to go to
that word and definition. This linking system also helps in cross
referencing. Where an illustration, figure or table is mentioned in a
definition a link will be indicated to the illustration.
In the paper edition there is a section of appendices at the end of the
book, in which useful items such as 'the periodic table of elements' or 'S I
' units or the 'Biological classification terms', to name some. On the
CD-ROM it is possible to reach these by their name or by appropriate links
in definitions as needed.
Core Markets
All students of science from their early teenage onwards. The public,
school, college, university and industrial institutions where there is
preparation for examinations or training given. The attractive ease of use
will make this a welcome addition to any person's learning materials with an
interest of any sort in reaching a "scientific outcome".
