Jean-Paul Van Belle - Career

  • While studying in Ghent, I spent 5 months in the accountancy department of an investment bank (Westvlaamsch Beroepskrediet) and did 14 months of part-time private tutoring in business economics and economics.
  • I was employed by the University of the Western Cape (UWC) as a junior lecturer since January 1984 and was promoted in 1987 to lecturer. I lectured mainly the Finance and MIS-related subjects on under- and post-graduate levels.
  • I was seconded to the Academic Development Centre as Project Coordinator for Computer-Supported Education (CSE) during 1991 to manage the downsizing of the PLATO/CDC CYBER mainframe-based system for CSE to a micro-computer based NOVELL network. 
  • From 1992 to 1997, I was instrumental in the setting up of the Information Systems Department at UWC, of which I was acting head of department.
  • I joined the Information Systems department at the University of Cape Town in August 1997 as a senior lecturer and was promoted in 2003 to associate professor.
