Spirit of 2010 Soccer World Cup arrives on campus
The spirit of the 2010 Soccer World Cup arrived at the University of Cape Town with a thump this week when a marketing campaign called Beyond the 90 minutes Road Trip filmed students learning the moves for the vibrant Soccer World Cup dance.
Led by outgoing Commerce Students Council president Dinika Govender, the students put heart, body and soul into the dance, which is known as the Diski dance. The video will be posted on YouTube and distributed here http://www.beyondthe90minutes.com/en/blog.php. An earlier version of the ad is here.
The campaign links the soccer experience to the broader tourism experience in the Cape, with three goals:
- To facilitate stays throughout the region before, between and after matches.
- To help visitors enjoy a fuller range of experiences in the Cape, even during matches for those visitors without tickets.
- To motivate non-soccer going visitors to enjoy the vibe during the 2010 FIFA World CupTM.
The Acting Dean of Commerce, Professor John Simpson, said UCT was gearing up to offer visitors the best experience for the 2010 Soccer World Cup in Cape Town by offering comfortable res accommodation on the slopes of the spectacular Devil’s Peak mountain at affordable prices. In addition, visitors to the 2010 World Cup would be transported in rebranded Jammie Shuttles to and from the airport, the games, city hotspots and winelands.
