Students flock to UCT Expo in Khayelitsha
The Faculty of Commerce stand at the UCT Expo held in Khayelitsha this weekend
was a magnet to more than 250 schoolgoers eager to find out about what the
Faculty had to offer them. A team from the Faculty, including Transformation
Officer Dr Ingrid Tufvesson and Information Systems lecturers Professor Michael
Kyobe and Ms Maureen Tanner inspired the students of tomorrow to apply to the
Faculty.
The schools invited to the annual UCT Expo in Khayelitsha included the Centre of
Science & Technology, Harry Gwala, Chris Hani, Joe Slovo, Bulumko, Luhaza,
Kwamfundo, Masiyile, Manyano, Intlanganiso, Thembelihle, Uxolo and Zola.
Some potential students were disappointed to discover that Maths Literacy was
not a ticket to the Faculty of Commerce as only students who have Mathematics in
matric will be considered.
Learners with good grades were told the good news that UCT is committed to
enabling scholars from disadvantaged schools to study and succeed. The Faculty
of Commerce has a leading programme, the Educational Development Unit, EDU,
which has a created a learning culture to enable students to succeed through the
ADBCom and ADBBusSci courses and a nurturing, supportive environment. Potential
students were also told that UCT will provide financial aid to students. Parents
need to fill out a document, Form 9, to make sure that they qualify for
financial aid. Potential students were also told about the National Benchmarking
Test (NBT) which will help more students qualify for UCT.

At Harry Gwala High School this weekend were Dr Ingrid Tufvesson, Ms Maureen
Tanner, schoolgoer Anesele Mpela and Information Systems lecturer Professor
Michael Kyobe.
