About this Programme:
In 2005, the DPRU was awarded a two year grant from the United Kingdom Department of International Development (DFID) to implement its national initiative, the Employment Promotion Programme (EPP).

The Employment Promotion Programme is aimed at providing an enabling environment in South Africa for the expansion in aggregate employment and in part to assist in achieving the stated government objective of halving unemployment by 2014.

Following the successful implementation of the first phase of the project (which ended in September 2007), the grant was extended by two years.

Policy and research work in Phase I of EPP had a strong focus on the design of programmatic solutions – rather than just the identification of issues. A key focus for Phase II is the implementation of these solutions – in other words implementing actual changes to policy.

The Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU) is part of the School of Economics at the University of Cape Town. We conduct research in the fields of labour markets, poverty and inequality.
