Researching the fields of labour markets, inequality and poverty

Workshop 2006

Poverty Reduction and Social Security

The Development Policy Research Unit presented a workshop on Poverty Reduction and Social Security for the National Treasury in December 2006. The four-day workshop aimed to provide theoretical background and facilitate discussion on the various complex issues surrounding poverty, inequality, social security, public spending and poverty, and the labour market. The DPRU was fortunate to, once again, have secured the participation of two international experts in this field, namely Ravi Kanbur, T.H. Lee Professor of World Affairs and Professor of Economics, and Steven Younger, Associate Director at the Food and Nutrition Policy Programme, both of Cornell University in the United States. The workshop was attended by representatives from National Treasury, the Presidency and Statistics South Africa, amongst others.
