Carlene van der Westhuizen joined the Development Policy Research Unit in February 2005 in the position of Senior Researcher. Her current projects include a Situational Analysis for the Western Cape Provincial Governments Skills Development Strategy.

Her previous involvement as a researcher was with the Budget Information Service at IDASA where she conducted budget and policy analysis on the impact of government budgets on the poor in South Africa. Specific research areas included national budget and policy analysis, sectoral provincial budget analysis, local government budget analysis, as well as monitoring of revenue collection and some basic tax research.

She also spent time at WESGRO (The Western Cape Investment and Trade Promotion Agency) as Trade Economist, Regional Economist, Research Assistant and Acting Information Services Officer.
