Workshops

Conferences and workshops play an important part in building capacity in social science research. They provide an opportunity for local researchers to discuss each others' work, to develop new ideas and approaches, and to learn from international scholars. The CSSR, and the Social Surveys Unit within it, have therefore hosted or co-hosted a series of events. These include:
  • Using the Time-Use Survey (June 2004)
  • Migration and Poverty (March 2004)
  • The Social Wage (February 2004)
  • Graduate Research Workshop (July 2003)
  • Techniques in Longitudinal Data Analysis (August 2002)
  • Social Science Longitudinal Analysis: Focus on Statistics South Africa (March 2002)
  • 'Social Hubble' Workshop (February 2002)
  • Panel Studies in the Social Sciences (October 2001)
The following workshops are currently being planned for late 2004 and 2005:

  • Social and economic change in the rural Western Cape
  • Dynamics of household composition and formation
  • Growing up in the new South Africa
  • Schooling in post-apartheid Cape Town
  • Claims on and obligations to kin in Southern Africa
