A bursary is financial assistance given to students for study or training. Each bursary gives different amounts of money and lasts for different periods. The assistance is given to students selected according to various criteria set by the donors and could include academic merit or financial need. Each bursary has specific conditions attached to it, for example, you may have to work for the company for as long as you have held the bursary, or you may have to be active in your community.

A scholarship is an amount of money given to a student of academic merit. Each scholarship has different conditions.

Entrance Scholarships

Entrance scholarships are offered by the Commerce Faculty on an overall point score for a South African equity candidate who achieves 60 points and meets admission requirements (matric exemption with no less than a C average in higher grade Mathematics) on our Commerce faculty scoring system of R 10000.

"The Thuthuka Bursary Fund" from SAICA (South African Institute for Chartered Accountants) assists academically-talented black students to pursue a B Com Accounting degree in order to become Chartered Accountants [CAs(SA)].

Howerver, students who do exceptionally well in most subjects yet obtain poor results in Mathematics do not qualify. Good results in Mathematics (higher grade) are key in a pursuing a career in Chartered Accountancy.

Interested in gaining work experience and a competitive edge while completing your degree? We offer a variety of internships, vacation work and work/study programs for both undergrads and graduate students. For graduates interested in becoming Chartered Accountants or Certified Public Accountants, we also provide the training and support needed to earn your professional certification.

Vacation Programmes and Vacation Work

Vacation programs, or "Vac" programmes, are offered twice a year; once in June and July and again in November and December. Vac programmes typically last a week and are designed to give students exposure to the basic principles of auditing and accounting through the use of case studies, business exercises and business simulations.

There is also an opportunity for Vacation employment or "Vac" work, offering students the opportunity to be part of an actual audit and to work at one of our client sites. Allowing students to move from theory to practice, Vac work provides relevant and practical audit exposure.

Both Vac programs and Vac work help us to assess a student's interaction skills in a team environment and assist in making our selection for training contracts.
