News :: Postdoctoral Fellowship in Demography

02/06/2004 - Advertisement

The Centre for Actuarial Research (CARe) at the University of Cape Town, with support from the Andrew W Mellon Foundation, offers one of the few postgraduate teaching, training and research programmes in demography in Southern Africa, drawing students every year from across the region to its 18 month MPhil and 3 year doctoral programmes.

Built around a small core of demographers, faculty are specialists in the measurement of mortality and fertility in developing countries, and have been at the forefront of modelling the spread and impact of HIV in Southern Africa. In addition, members have a wide range of other research interests including migration and the assessment and evaluation of censuses. Particular emphasis is placed on the rigorous analysis and interpretation of demographic data from the region, and the application, refinement and further development of quantitative (technical) demographic methods in the pursuit of enhancing understanding of the regions population dynamics.

The University of Cape Town, set in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, is an internationally recognised centre of academic excellence committed to research in South and Southern Africa. We are fortunate to be able to offer recent doctoral graduates the opportunity to pursue postdoctoral research for one year, possibly renewable, at the Centre. A comparatively generous stipend of approximately R150 000 per annum (which may not be taxable, after representation to the South African revenue authorities) is attached to the fellowship. In June 2004, $1 = R6.50 and 1 = R12.00.

The successful fellow will have recently completed his or her doctoral studies on a topic congruent with the Centres current research profile, and have a demonstrable interest in the demography of Southern Africa. Fellows would be expected to be self-motivating, and to contribute to the academic life of the Centre through teaching on the Centres programme, participation in the Centres seminar series, and publication of research.

The post will remain vacant until filled, but it is hoped that the successful applicant will be in a position to take up the post in January 2005.

Expressions of interest and further enquiries should be directed to
