Postgraduate Diplomas
Enterprise Management
Replacing the Postgraduate Diploma in
Organisation and Management, this diploma offers students the same
action learning environment and similar range of business and
management courses, but utilises the best of the other Postgraduate
Diplomas in Management and couples that with a strongly
entrepreneurial focus.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Enterprise Management
(PDEM) offers its students unique learning opportunities. The
diploma makes extensive use of action learning (learning by doing)
as an effective way to learn about organisations. Entrepreneurship
is not about small business; entrepreneurial skills are becoming
increasingly sought after and valued in organisations of all shapes
and sizes.
Students, in small groups, are required to set up
and run real businesses for the duration of the year of study. This
practical side of the course is balanced by sound academic theory
taught in a variety of modules throughout the year. In this way,
students are given opportunities to implement and evaluate theory in
their own businesses.
While students are running their own business
(Genesis Project), they concurrently attend courses that have been
developed both specifically for the PDEM, as well for the other
diplomas in management. The first half of the year concentrates
mainly on general business courses (entrepreneurial strategies,
finance, business in context, marketing and business computing). In
the second half of the year the focus falls on the area of specific
study, in this case, enterprise management. Courses here include:
Management Theory, The Politics of Enterprise, People Management and
Development and Information Technology and Marketing. Students also
attend a course in Business Communication and Career Development
which develops other critical skills.
Lecturers make use of lectures, skills workshops
and regular evaluations in each course, and students are expected to
participate fully in all aspects of the course.
The diploma accepts students with an
undergraduate degree except a BBusSci, and encourages diversity
within the group. Students from different countries, and even
different continents, from social science, arts, science, medicine,
music, engineering and architecture have benefited from this course.
Whether you have a general undergraduate degree (e.g. humanities)
and want to learn about the real mechanics of organisations, or have
a specialised degree (e.g. quantity surveying), and want to combine
your specialised knowledge with sound enterprise practice and
management skills, or if you want to learn what it is like to start
and run a business, PDEM is worth exploring.
Our graduates are working in different industries
all over the world. They can think on their feet, work well with
each other and apply their knowledge in almost any situation.
