BUS2015S - Organisational Design and Resourcing

BUS2015S: Organisational Design and Resourcing consists of two sections, Organisational Architecture and Recruitment & Selection (Staffing).

Organisational architecture

This module explores the nature of organisations and covers issues related to the interface between design and strategy in organisations. Topics include an overview of the link between organisational strategy and organisational design, job and role design, and the design of reward systems. On completion of this module, you will have gained knowledge and understanding of the following:

  • How an organisation’s strategy influences organisational structure, job content and the management of employee rewards
  • Factors that affect organisational design
  • Different approaches to designing organisations
  • How to design jobs
  • How to design a reward system for a specific structure and job
  • The importance of having an appropriate organisational design, effective job design, and motivating reward system when managing people to realise an organisations’ strategy

Recruitment & Selection (Staffing)

The second section, Recruitment & Selection, covers topics related to staff selection including an examination of the recruitment and selection process, competency-based recruitment and selection, the assessment of job applicants, and ethical dilemmas in recruitment and selection. We will discuss different recruitment sources (internal and external), the use of psychometric testing, and the legal framework that governs recruitment and selection in South Africa. Recent research regarding recruitment and selection will be applied to highlight issues relevant to the South African labour market. After you have completed this section of the course, you will have gained knowledge and understanding of the following:

  • Different recruitment and selection process models
  • The recruitment and selection planning process in a South African context
  • The advantages and disadvantages of different sources of recruitment
  • The role of psychometric assessment in the recruitment and selection process
  • Ensuring fairness (ethical and legal) in recruitment and selection
