Aims of this Course

The BUS 1007S course aims to introduce students to the theory and practice of Organisational Psychology (OP), using three organising principles. These are: 1) organisations (i.e. discussing different types of organisations and their varying nature); 2) people (i.e. how people behave in the workplace or organisational context); and 3) processes (i.e. the people management processes that ensure the effective functioning of an organisation).

Furthermore, this course specifically aims to instil an occupational identity within students that have chosen to study in this field. After this course you should have a clear idea of what an organisational psychologist does

Learning Outcomes

The course is divided into four sections and each of these have the following learning outcomes.

Introduction to the Subject Area and Practice of OP

After completion of this section, students should have a good understanding of:

  • Organisational Psychology as a field of study.
  • Professional registration as an Industrial Psychologist and job opportunities in the practice area of Organisational Psychology.
  • How organisations, people and work processes combine to form the subject area of Organisational Psychology.

People: Human behaviour in the Organisational Context

After completion of this section, students should have a good understanding of:

  • Human behaviour in organisations, which includes: job satisfaction; communication and information technology; organisational citizenship behaviour; power, influence and politics; and social identity and fairness.

Processes: People Management Processes in Organisations

After completion of this section, students should have a good understanding of:

  • The people management processes that have to be put in place to ensure the success of the organisation. These processes include: recruitment and selection, performance management, training and development, and health and safety.

Organisations: Definitions, Structure and Nature

After completion of this section, students should have a good understanding of:

  • Different kinds of organisations.
  • Organisational structures (i.e. the organisational architecture).
  • Organisational culture and climate.
  • Organisational change and transformation.
