Master of Business Science (MBusSc), Commerce (MCom), or Philosphy (MPhil) by Dissertation only or by Coursework and Dissertation.
Award of the degree of Master by coursework and dissertation shall be dependent on the candidate completing the prescribed courses and submitting an acceptable research dissertation.
A candidate may apply for credit for up to 36 credits in respect of courses where the candidate has passed an equivalent level examination at another university, through the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) or the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA).
A candidate who holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Actuarial Science of the University shall be required to complete a full dissertation to fulfil the requirements for the award of the degree.
An honours-equivalent degree and exemptions or passes from subjects CT1-CT8 of the IFoA or A101-A103 and A201-A205 of ASSA.
Candidates will be required to complete courses worth at least 180 credits from the following alternatives:
Alternative 1 (dissertation only):
Acceptable research dissertation (180 credits)
Alternative 2 (long paper (108 credits) + 72 credits from coursework):
Students can obtain 2 x 36 credits for completing the university courses for the F100-level exams of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA).
Students are required to select an actuarial topic for their dissertations and prepare a research proposal which is to be approved by the Actuarial Science Section. Students will additionally require a supervisor who is appropriately qualified in the selected field of research.
