I am already quite computer literate. Do I need to attend the 2 week
Computer Literacy module of INF1002F / S?
- You may apply for exemption from the Computer Literacy module if you have
passed Computer Studies for Matric, or gained an equivalent qualification
covering Computer Basics, Windows and Word Processing elsewhere. (Application
forms at I.S. Reception or Commerce Labs Help Desk).
- If you dont have a qualification, but feel you have attained the
necessary standard (see syllabus on INF102 noticeboard), you may write the
tests early. All students must still attend the first lecture, later practical
activities, and all theory lectures.
Can I register for INF1003 (Commercial Programming) concurrently with some
or all of the second year Information Systems courses?
- No. You may only register for the second year Information Systems courses
if you have already passed both INF1002 and INF1003.
I am transferring from the Science Faculty, and have completed CS1a and
CS1b. Do I need to register for the first year Information Systems courses?
- No. If you have already completed both CS1a and CS1b, then you will be
allowed to register for the second year Information Systems courses.
I am transferring from the Science Faculty, and have completed ONLY CS1a,
not CS1b. What first year Information Systems courses will I still have to do?
- You will have to do INF1003S
I am a student in the Faculty of Humanities but would really like to
include some courses in Information Systems in my curriculum. Which IS courses
may I register for?
- The only Information Systems course which is offered to students outside
of the Commerce faculty is INF1002S. This may be taken by Humanities students
who are registered for the SSHB49 programme (Labour, Organisational Psychology
and HR Management). Other Humanities students may be allowed to register for
INF1002S in the second semester, subject to availability of space.
Can I register for some (but not all) of the second year Information
Systems courses?
- Second year students are required to register simultaneously for all of
the second year courses that they have not yet passed. Thus if you are
registering for second year IS courses for the first time, you would need to
register for all four courses. If you are repeating your second year, you must
register for all outstanding second year IS courses.
I am not following either the BCom(IS) or the BBusSci(IS) programme, but I
would really like to continue with Information Systems beyond INF102. Which
other IS courses can I register for?
- If you are a Commerce student, then your curriculum will probably include
INF2004F.
Some BSc(Computer Science) students may include IS courses in their
curriculum.
INF1002 is the only IS course currently offered to Humanities students.
How do I know what is considered to be an approved half course in the
second or
third year curriculum?
- A list of suggested half courses (second or third year status) is provided
by the IS department. In general, any 2nd or 3rd year course which forms part of a standard BCom or BBusSci
curriculum is acceptable.
I am doing a BCom(IS), and want to continue to IS Honours next year. What
marks will I have to obtain for the IS3 courses, and when should I apply?
- Applications for the IS Honours course will be invited from the IS3 class
during the second semester. To qualify, you should aim to obtain an average of
65% for the four IS3 courses together, with a mark of at least 60% for each
individual course.
I am doing the third year of a BBusSc(IS). Will I automatically get into
IS Honours next year?
- No, you have to qualify to gain entry to IS Honours, similarly to BCom(IS)
students. If you do not achieve the necessary standard in your 3rd year you
may have to switch to an alternative major or programme.
