:: Master of Commerce in Information Systems Coursework
Bursaries Available to IS
Masters Students
Introduction
Every year, the department endeavours to make funds available to enable
students to cover part of their living and study expenses. Most of these funds
are in the form of a monthly remuneration in lieu of tutoring and lecturing
services provided to the department. Hourly rates start from just over R30/hour
(subject to a university limit of 10 hours/week) though, in the past, the
department was very lucky in securing additional funds in order to pay a
significantly better rate. However, due to the nature of the budgeting process
within the university environment, there can be no guarantees as to the actual
amounts and the availability of suitable jobs. It is therefore expected from the
student applicant to have sufficient funds available PRIOR to enrolling to the
programme. Having said this, generally our masters students get preferential
treatment for any internal tutoring jobs. In addition, quite a few opportunities
present themselves from time to time to earn money outside UCT on a part-time
basis. However, it cannot be sufficiently stressed that the lure of earning
money from "outside opportunities" often drags students down the long slippery
slope of postponing their dissertation research and we caution students strongly
against accepting too many commitments outside their students.
In addition to paid tutor opportunities, students are strongly encouraged to
apply to outside bursaries and scholarship. The following gives some information
on the recurrent NRF bursaries from which many masters students in IS have
benefited. It is expected that the deadlines and amounts in the 2004 cycle will
be similar.
The following two bursaries are currently available there appears to be no
reason why you cannot apply to both if you qualify.
-
R30 000 NRF scarce skills scholarship bursary which is available to ALL
full-time IS Masters students. The internal UCT deadline is 20th July. The
bursary application forms are available from Aayesha Patel (Aayesha.Patel@uct.ac.za
/ 6504028) or on your G: (CRSDATA\INF4014W) drive with the names SSS2 NRF
Application Form & Instructions.doc.
-
R33 000 NRF Prestigious/equity scholarship bursary available to highly
talented and/or equity students. Obtain the forms from Postgraduate Funding
Office, Otto Beit Building Upper Campus. (Available for up to 2 years of
study). Internal UCT deadline is 20th July.
Find more information on both bursaries below. You may also want to go to the
PG funding office for more information (as well as possible other bursaries!). I
have a subjective feeling that money will probably be most easily available from
the scarce skills scholarship route.
