INF4024W :: Information Systems Honours (Part-Time)

Course Information

Welcome to Part Time Honours in Information Systems

This course is designed to follow on from either of the Postgraduate Diploma coursework courses (INF4012W; INF4015W; INF4016W). It provides a first research exposure leading to an Honours degree. Candidates will be expected to develop critical reading, analysis and research design skills, as well as to demonstrate good writing skills. The year commences with taught weekly evening sessions of three hours each during which research techniques are covered. The Department may, at its discretion, choose to cover some materials via a short full time block, not exceeding one week in duration. Once the basics are in place, students will select topics and prepare proposals.

Reviews, involving a three-hour evening session, will occur monthly. Students will be encouraged to meet between reviews in focus groups comprising a small number of students pursuing similar or related topics.

Objectives

The Honours is intended as a first research degree. It gives candidates exposure to conducting research in a rigorous manner and producing a sound academic technical report (mini thesis). It provides access to higher degrees, such as Masters and Doctoral programmes.

Content & Format

The Honours comprises a taught block covering research methodology. Following this, candidates develop their own research, meeting regularly with faculty and peer groups. Lecture and review meetings will be scheduled on Wednesday evenings.

The faculty meetings review progress, critique interim deliverables and provide guidance. The peer group meetings provide working forums and support of other students. Peer groups are chosen so that students working on similar topics are grouped together, allowing the sharing of experience, research effort and sources.

Application

Entrance to the Part Time Honours programme is through the Post Graduate Diploma. Students who have performed well on the Postgraduate Diploma are typically invited to convert to the Honours programme.

Prerequisites

Candidates must have completed the Postgraduate Diploma, obtaining above average results. Candidates must have experience of critical reading, literature survey work and have previously written at least four essays or white papers at postgraduate level. Exposure to research methods and/ or statistical methods will be an advantage, but is not required.

Evaluation

Candidates will be evaluated based upon multiple deliverables and the final report as follows:

Research Proposal - 5%

Literature Survey - 10%

Research Design - 10%

Presentation of Research Findings 10%

Technical Report  65%

An overall mark of 50% or better is required to pass the programme. In addition, a minimum of 50% must be obtained for the Technical Report.
