Systems Development Project (INF3003W) is a 2 semester course for students majoring in Information Systems (IS) who wish not only to gain an understanding of the issues that are influencing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Projects, but also experience the development and implementation of such a project. This IS3 Course thus combines the theoretical elements of project management with the practical implementation of these concepts through the completion of a systems development group project, integrating practical and theoretical elements obtained and developed during other undergraduate IS courses.

The theoretical parts of this course introduce the student to the important aspects of managing projects and people in the ICT Project environment. It also equips the student with crucial problem-solving skills using object-oriented techniques, and endeavours to improve technical document writing skills. Students should be aware that successful project management consists of a sound plan (using Project Management tools and techniques) and strong people management to direct the plan through to the completion of the projects deliverables. The basis of this development process is the project team. The practical part of this course involves the application and implementation of these concepts following the full life cycle of a project using a team-based IS project in a real-life setting.

The course will be structured around three main areas:

  • Project management - project lifecycle, scope management, project planning, critical success factors, planning reference frameworks, project controls, estimating techniques, risks management, communication management
  • People management - project teams, staff selection, motivation, development and appraisal, leadership, negotiations with industry
  • Implementation - obtain a sponsor; identify and understand the business problem; analyse, design and build the proposed system; delivery of a shrink wrapped product.

A special structure will be followed to accommodate INF3011F students within the framework of this course.
