Course Description
This course provides a business perspective of information systems, and
stresses how information systems can be used to improve the planning and
running of businesses. The course introduces students to the theoretical and
practical basics of business and information systems. It investigates
information system concepts such as data, input, processing, output, and
information technology such as hardware, software and networks. It
investigates the use of information technology and communication technology
as well as their convergence (coming together) to support business
information systems. The nature and value of information as well as the
impact of Internet technology on organisations and society are also
considered.

[Task 1] Students have to submit
completed Team Submission Forms by 03 August. Students
also have to provide evidence of having used the UCT student
Information System, and answered questions T1.1-T1.10 on Vula due

Students, who fail to write the Mid semester Test and provide a valid
medical certificate, will have their final examinations count 60% of their total
mark.

Please Note:
- Late assignments will be penalised according to Department rules (5
percentage points for the first day late and 1 percentage point for each
day thereafter, with a maximum of 10 percentage points. Assignments that
are more than seven days late will not be accepted, and the students
will score zero for that work).
- Assignments must be handed in electronically to Turnitin (www.turnitin.com).
The deadline for submissions is always 12h00 on the day specified.
Submission times will be taken as the time the assignment was
electronically submitted to Turnitin.
- In order to write the final examinations, a student must have a
year mark greater than or equal to 45% (consists of marks from Tasks
1-15, plus mid semester test mark).
- To successfully complete this course, students must achieve an
overall mark of at least 50% AND this must include an overall mark of at
least 50% in the final examinations. In the case of an overall mark of
50% or over with the exams having been failed, the student will be
awarded a grade of Fail.
- Any objections by students must be raised within 7 days of the event,
or within 7 days of notification.
