African Programme on Rethinking Development Economics (APORDE) 2008
The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti), the Embassy of France, the
French Development Agency (AFD) and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS)
are co-hosting the second African Programme on Rethinking Development Economics
(APORDE) seminar in Stellenbosch (1 - 14 June 2008). The aim of the seminar is
to bring together promising policy makers, trade-unionists and academics from
the continent and the rest of the developing world to discuss and engage with
alternative approaches to development issues. The 26 selected participants
include 20 from Africa and 6 from the rest of the developing world.
"APORDE is being conducted in a climate when there is much greater
contestation of ideas around the possible options for economic development and
industrialisation than in many decades.
An initiative like APORDE can make a very important contribution in
offering us new insights and reflections on the critical questions of building a
developmental state and mounting a serious industrial policy."
Dr. Rob Davies, Deputy-Minister of Trade and Industry
Building on the success of the 2007 edition, APORDE is a platform for the
discussion of alternatives to mainstream thinking on development economics.
Renowned academics such as Professors Michel Aglietta (Institut Universitaire de
France), Simon Roberts (South African Competition Commission), Ben Fine (SOAS),
Ha-Joon Chang (Cambridge) and Wilson Peres (CEPAL) will lecture on topics
ranging from industrial policy, poverty and financial crises to violent
conflict. The seminar will build capacity by drawing participants into the
debate on mainstream and populist approaches to development. APORDE thus aims to
enable participants to respond critically to external development initiatives
and to challenge them to generate endogenous strategies. Some of the lectures
will assess development experiences such as those of East Asia and Latin
America.\
As part of the APORDE initiative, there will also be a series of public
lectures held at the University of the Western Cape, the University of Cape Town
and the University of the Witwatersrand. Participating academics will share
their expertise on critical development issues such as Finance and Development,
Technical Progress and Structural Change, and Industrial Policies.
