Economics students spend vacation at Goldman Sachs in London
During the Easter Vacation, 25 students from Africa, were given the
unbelievable opportunity to attend the Goldman Sachs Spring Programme in London
through the Goldman Sachs Africa Initiative.
The African Students joined up with their European counterparts to spend a week
at the world's most pre-eminent investment bank. The highly diversified
programme saw students doing a range of tasks from desk rotations, presenting
investment strategies to Managing Directors, listening to presentations on
topical issues such as the Credit Crunch, and gaining a deeper insight into a
career in the world of banking.
UCT were well-represented with no fewer than ten students, from a range of
degrees, four of whom are from the Economics Department.
The programme was well-received by the students, who found it to be challenging,
exciting and a great learning opportunity. One of the main comments that came
through was how useful the Business Science Degree is. Goldmans were surprised
by the level of knowledge and mature insight, even in comparison to those from
Ox-Bridge.
These students have all now applied for the 10 week Summer Internship, a highly
competitive global programme.
The students from UCT who participated were:
- Byrne Baister
- Philip Rogers
- Guy De Freitas
- Derek Armstrong
- Michael Fargher
- Taku Shanji
- Nomfundo Mphuti
- Nosipho Makhanya
- Lindi Mitchell
- Matthew Douglas
- Guy Jackson
- Dominic Leong
