General Description
This one year Honours programme aims to prepare students to
participate as highly competent professionals in the financial sector of the
economy. To this purpose the programme is comprised of a range of modules which include studies in economic principles of finance, analysis and
interpretation of financial statements, statistical methods in finance, equity
valuation, futures and derivatives, fixed income securities, portfolio
management and securities legislation.
The programme is structured such that the graduate should be
able to analyse financial situations at an executive level; to manage financial
portfolios; to utilise advanced quantitative methods to make financial
decisions based on financial forecasts; and to interact between different
professions to form financial
strategies.

Course Overview
The UCT School of Economics
recognises that talented manpower is in relatively short supply
in the financial services industry, broadly defined; that many
people presently employed in the financial services industry,
while having acquired substantial knowledge from 'on-the-job'
training, require yet further education, both academic and
practical, in various aspects of the industry. The School
further recognises that financial services firms often hire
otherwise able employees, whose backgrounds in accounting,
economics, finance, law and statistics , and various
institutional and practical areas of the industry, are less than
what the firms might desire; and that the firms themselves are
not equipped to offer their employees an opportunity to increase
their human capital, both in depth and breadth, to the extent
which both employers and employees would like.
One of the purposes of this
course, as is clear from the detailed module information, is to
provide a practical and viable solution to these problems. It is
expected that students who complete the course will be able,
immediately upon employment, to make real and significant
contributions to their firms, with only minimal 'in house'
training.
As will also be clear from the
course outline, students who successfully complete the course
should possess the knowledge that would enable them to pass
Parts I and II of the Chartered Financial Analysts'
examinations, which is a prestigious industry certification
offered by the Association of Investment Management and
Research. This course, however, is not designed to be one which
simply prepares students for the CFA exams; success on that,
or similar, exams would be a mere by-product of success on the
course.
The C.F.A. designation is a
registered trademark of the Association of Investment Management
and Research.
The programme is taught by both
academics and practitioners working in financial markets, so,
students will learn how the academic tools acquired earlier in
the module can be readily applied in the industry.
Upon successful completion of the
course, the student will receive the B.Com. (Hons) degree from
the School of Economics of the University of Cape Town.
NOTE:
Requirements for Completion: Successful completion of the
course, and receipt of the B.Com. (Hons) degree requires the
student attain a minimum average of 50% over all modules ; and
no less than 40% for any given module.
