- Advanced Labour Economics
Course Information
The aim of the course is to ensure that students have the opportunity to
learn the basic theory of modern labour economics in such a way as to enable
them to understand and tackle the crucial problems facing southern Africa today.
To do this it will be necessary for students to work through a basic text book
[Ehrenberg, Ronald G. & Smith, Robert S, Modern Labor Economics: Theory & Public
Policy, 7th, 8th or 9th Edition, Reading Massachusetts] and to read a number of
specific articles pertaining to the South African economy. Lectures will focus
on tools of analysis and on South African labour issues within their wider
historical context.

- Migration (incl. Brain Drain)
- Human Capital & Training
- The Role of the Labour Market in South Africa’s Growth Trajectory
- Collective Bargaining
- Impact & consequences of trade unions in South Africa
- Participation, Employment, Unemployment and Earnings
- Skills Shortages & Graduate Unemployment
