ECO1010X
- Microeconomics
Course Information
ECO1010X is a one-semester course for students who are registered for the
4-year B.Comm. or the 5-year B.Bus.Sci. in the Commerce Faculty.
This course is designed specifically for those students on the EDU and EDU who
we believe are capable of completing the first-year microeconomics course in a
single semester.
Teaching and learning at university is very different from what you experienced
at school. The pace is much faster, the amount of work to be covered much
greater, and the level of understanding demanded much higher. In addition you
are responsible for ensuring that you attend lectures and tutorials, that you
hand in assignments on time, and that you do the necessary revision for tests
and examinations. It is not surprising that many students do not cope. Indeed,
for first-year microeconomics the pass rate on the mainstream rarely exceeds
70%.
The purpose of this course is two-fold; firstly, to ensure that you pass the
course, and secondly, to give you the opportunity to learn additional valuable
skills that you can apply in further courses in economics and other subjects.
In addition to the lectures, which are held five times a week, there is a
double-period tutorial each week. It is important that you are able to express
yourself clearly in writing, and you are given plenty of opportunity to practise
this skill. In addition you will write four tests during the semester. With one
exception the tests consists mainly of written as opposed to multiple-choice
questions. This too will help you to prepare for the kind of assessment that is
undertaken in this and subsequent courses.
The relevant chapters of the textbook and the course reader define the content
of the course. You should prepare for the lectures by reading ahead in the
textbook.
You will write the same final examination as set for ECO1010F. This examination
consists of multiple-choice and essay questions.
You are here because we think that you can make a success of this course. If you
work hard and enthusiastically from the first day you should succeed.
Best wishes and good luck
