- Economics for Engineers
Course Information
The purpose of this course is to provide the students with a thorough
grounding in introductory economic theory, and to introduce them to some of its
practical applications, especially South African economic issues. This will
enable students to understand the way an economy works and how it may influence
them as consumers and later as professionals in business. This course is
specifically designed for and exclusive to students registered in the Faculty of
Engineering and the Built Environment.

Mondays and Fridays: 6th and 7th Periods

Course Topics
- Week 1-3: Introduction - what is economics, the economic problem and the
South African economy, basic macroeconomic indicators
- Week 4-6: Price theory and applications - demand, supply and price
determination, measuring elasticites, applications (taxation and price
controls)
- Week 7: Labour economics
- Week 8-11: Macroeconomics - business cycles, money, inflation, monetary
and fiscal policy, balance of payments and exchange rates
- Week 12: Environmental economics
