Over the last few years the proliferation of computer viruses over the Internet has hit high-gear. The number of new viruses and virus-strains released daily is staggering. At the moment Network Associates' McAfee AVERT Virus Information Library contains a list of over 81,000 virus threats that exist today. Although new and sophisticated tools are being developed to combat against these virus incursions, the battle seems destined to be a never-ending one. Virus programmers always seem to stay just one step ahead of the defense, and with the widespread availability of virus-creation kits, even non-technical people can create viruses to terrorise the public domain. It has become imperative that you protect your machine with some form of Virus Protection Package, especially if you are connected to the Internet.

This section of the Commerce I.T. website hosts some patches for viruses that have struck the UCT network in the past and are still present on the network today. Simply download the patch and follow the installation instructions to ensure that you are protected.

Remember, it is always better to be safe than sorry. If you receive an email with a suspicious attachment or download a dubious file, do not open it! The Internet is no longer a friendly place.
