The web is awash with a number of freeware and shareware utilities that
come in very useful to people. This section of the Commerce I.T. website
hosts some utilities that staff and students might enjoy the use of. All
files displayed here are for public download.
The utilities are listed in alphabetical order. Each utility has a brief
description followed by the files to download. Commerce I.T. takes no
responsibility for the files hosted here and will not be held liable for any
problems you might encounter using the software. All software has been
tested and are certified virus free.
.Net Framework
.Net Framework Redistributable Package is a necessary prerequisite for many programs created using Microsofts .Net languages.
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Adobe’s PDF file format has become a popular way of publishing information on the web. Unlike Microsoft who doesn’t offer a free reader for their rival Microsoft Word Document format, Adobe has released the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Now up to version 7, Acrobat Reader allows users to view and print Adobe PDF files.
To install the software, simply double-click on the file once it has downloaded and follow the onscreen instructions.
Assign USB Flash Disk Drive Letter
When a flash disk is inserted into a lab computer, it is automatically assigned the driveletter F:\. However, this causes problems as F:\ is already mapped to the students network drive, meaning that the flash disk isnt assigned a valid handle in the logical disk manager. This application allows the user to change the drive letter assigned to the flash disk using a GUI interface.
Bullfighter
Bullfighter by Deloitte Consulting is a Microsoft Word/Powerpoint add-on that helps strip documents of unnecessary jargon and technical terms, creating a simpler and more reader-friendly text. This application is for people who are tired of receiving documents with phrases that are ambiguous, not getting to the point or just full of "bull". To install the software, close any open Microsoft Office products and double-click on the downloaded file. A FAQ and Readme file are also available for download.
LeapFTP 2.7.3
FTP. File Transfer Protocol. Apart from HTTP, FTP is probably one of the safest and most secure ways of transferring files from one PC to another. LeapFTP (version 2.7.3) is LeapWare’s simple to use FTP client that allows for multiple download threads to a FTP host. It provides all the basic FTP functionality as well as the ability to conduct multiple sessions, connecting to separate FTP servers simultaneously. To install the program, simply double-click on the downloaded file icon and follow the onscreen instructions.

Windows Media Player Series
Microsofts Media Player Series is the official media player released and distributed by Microsoft. It is capable of playing most types of movie and music files. Media Player has a number of special capabilities built in and allows you to catalogue the media files kept on your P.C. It also allows for media license management. Although considered a bulky program, Media Player is one of the more widespread media players around. To install the program, simply double-click on the downloaded file icon and follow the onscreen instructions.
Winzip
Winzip is one of the oldest and most well-known archive compression utilities for the Windows platform. Winzip allows you to compress a number of files into a single archive, reducing the overall size of the files. Winzip also allows you to archive a number of files to a removable disk, providing automatic disk-spanning should the archive be larger than the destination disk. To install Winzip, simply double-click on the downloaded file icon and follow the onscreen instructions.
