Computer Labs
The Commerce Faculty has a number of computer labs located on the third
floor, basement and 1st level of the Leslie Commerce Building. The labs are
for the use of students enrolled in any Commerce course. Currently there are
over 6500 user accounts.
Comlab Computer Lab:
The Comlab facility is the oldest of the Commerce Faculty's student
computing resources. It is currently subdivided into eleven distinct labs,
nine of which are for undergraduate students. The main Comlab area houses
the open area labs, G, H and I, as well as the six tutorial labs, A, B, C,
D, E and F. The Comlab facility is open 24 hours a day, access being
controlled through swipe card readers. The open area labs provide guaranteed
student work space while the tutorial labs provide space where lecturers can
organise and run tutorials.
Commerce Postgraduate Computer Labs J and K :
The two postgraduate and honours students labs, J and K are situated
apart from the main Comlab facility. They are open office hours 8:00 to
16:30,
access being controlled through swipe card readers. They provide a little
more space for the senior students, away from the frantic bustle of the
numerous undergraduate students. Please note Commerce PostGraduate students
are deemed to be those students who have completed a B.Com or B BusSci
degree and are doing Postgraduate studies, i.e. this does not include
Postgraduate Diploma Students.
Lewis Computer Lab:
The Lewis lab falls under Comlab. It was created specifically for use by
Information Systems honours students. It also has an area for other
postgraduate students. It is open 24 hours a day, access being controlled
through a swipe card reader.
Commerce Alumni Computer Lab:
The newest lab in the Commerce Faculty, this
state-of-the art, multi-media teaching, learning and conferencing computer
facility was initiated by the Commerce I.T. Department. The vision for this lab was one of a high
quality, hi-tech, teaching computer laboratory, a venue where lecturers
could do hands-on tutorials in a highly visual environment. Funding was
obtained from various sources, including funds collected from the Commerce
Faculty Alumni.
Located in the level 1 area of the Leslie Commerce Building, this lab houses
:
197 high level PCs. The
operating system is Windows XP Professional, and each machine has a suite
of Application Software, starting with Office 2007, Visual
Studio.NET, plus various statistical analysis applications, accounting
applications and programming languages.
The audio visual setup included 16 T.V. monitors which can be connected up
to a laptop, plus T.V. Cameras, sound system , DVD and VCR. This will
effectively allow 2 lecturers at a time to run 2 different lectures, in 2 of
the labs, or 1 lecturer to utilise the entire lab, but teaching from a
central point. The lecturer s can interchange their image with that of their
laptop, visually demonstrating hands on computing.
This lab will be open during office hours only (08:00-17:00), or by special arrangement,
and is open to the Commerce Faculty only.
Out of term it will be available for hire as a teaching venue.
All enquiries regarding booking this lab to be directed at Tracy Carney on
