Demography Seminar: Stephen Kramer (01/08/2008)
The second demography seminar of this semester, titled Error and bias in
the orphanhood method of estimating adult mortality will be presented by
Stephen Kramer (Masters student at UCT; Swiss-Re, London) on Friday 1 August at
12.45 for 1pm - 2pm in Leslie Commerce 2A (aka the Nedbank Room)
All welcome. Please distribute to any colleagues you feel may be interested
An abstract of the seminar is given below:
The orphanhood method of estimating mortality may be inaccurate if HIV is
present in a population. Bias will be present, mainly due to the effects of HIV
on fertility and due to correlations between the mortality of mothers and
children. In addition, using standard model life tables is likely to lead to
further error. These biases and errors will be examined in the seminar.
