UCT Professor George Lindsey Killed in Plane Crash
Dear colleagues
I write to inform you of the tragic death of Professor George Lindsey. Professor
Lindsey died on Friday, the 2nd of May 2008 when the aircraft he was flying
crashed. His daughter, who was with him in the aircraft, is receiving treatment
at a local hospital.
Professor Lindsey was a Professor in the Molecular and Cell Biology Department
in the Faculty of Science.
Professor Lindsey was a member of the UCT community for over 30 years. Having
come to UCT with a PhD from the University of Sussex, he worked from 1974 - 1978
as a researcher at the UCT Medical School and was appointed to an academic
position in the Department of Biochemistry at UCT in 1979. He rose through the
ranks and was promoted Ad Hominem to Professor in the Department of Molecular
and Cell Biology as of 1 January 2008.
Professor Lindsey was a Student Advisor for many years, supervised many Masters
and Doctoral students and loved his biochemistry laboratory.
We have expressed our sincere sympathies, on behalf of the entire UCT community,
to the family of Professor Lindsey, and have offered our support during this
period.
