CEG Session: 13/11/2007

Dear colleagues

You are warmly invited to the last CEG session for 2007. (Tuesday, 13 November, 1 - 2 p.m., LC 6.14). Lunch will be provided.

A/Professor Mbulungeni Madiba (Multilingualism Education Project) will present :

Promoting multilingualism in the curriculum through multilingual glossaries

In 1999, UCT developed its Language Policy which was then approved by Senate and Council. The policy was revised in 2003. This Policy takes as its starting point the need to prepare students to participate fully in a multilingual society, where multilingual proficiency and awareness are essential. In 2004 the Language Plan was developed to guide the implementation of the University Language policy in accordance with the requirements of the National Language Policy for Higher Education adopted by Cabinet in 2002. The Multilingualism Education Project (MEP) was established in 2005 to give effect to the Language Plan. One of the main objectives of MEP is to ensure the development of appropriate multilingual materials in the curriculum in order to support students for whom English is not the first language.

The aim of this presentation is to discuss the Multilingual Glossaries project which MEP has initiated and to explore possible collaboration with the Commerce Faculty. Already the Faculty of Science, Health Sciences and Law are involved in the pilot project. The seminar will provide the opportunity to share with the Faculty the theoretical framework of the project, its design and implementation strategies.

Please send an e-mail to indicate whether you will be attending so that we can cater appropriately.

kind regards

June Pym
