Details of Programme Syllabi

Bachelor of Education Development Unit (EDU)

This BCom degree programme has been structured over a four-year period offering a range of additional support and value not offered in the standard programme. The EDU specifically addresses the gaps and disparities in our educational/life experience so that we can be better equipped to manage the BCom programme. In addition it provides students with a variety of types of support that enhance a broad and comprehensive range of educational and life skills. Being on this programme means that your progress is monitored, you have regular contact with the coordinator of the programme, where you can bring your day-to-day and academic concerns. You also have a range of opportunities to interact with your fellow students to develop and practice
collaborative learning and communication skills. Specific support exists in Language development and Mathematics, as well as a range of additional interventions at varying levels in the degree course.

Admission to the programme

Your application for the Commerce Academic Programme (EDU) is carefully screened to assess whether you indeed have had gaps in your education or general life experiences. If you are accepted for a three year BCom degree, you may still choose to be considered to be accepted for the EDU. If you have not been accepted for the three year BCom programme, with careful assessment regarding your academic potential and ability to succeed, you could be accepted to the four year EDU. We do not state a particular matric score that should be attained, as your acceptance is weighed against a variety of admission criteria related to academic potential and background.

EDU structure

Once you are accepted for the BCom you are eligible to complete any of the BCom streams (providing that you meet the particular requirements for the given streams).

In your first year you will complete the following courses:

ACC106G Financial Accounting
ECO1010H Microeconomics
INF1002H Foundation of Information Systems
STA101H Statistics 101
ACCIIIT Financial Accounting IB
OR ACC1012S Business Accounting

It is important to remember that a student who has completed the requirements for the EDU BCom will be awarded the same degree certificate as a student who has completed the standard BCom degree.
