Details of Programme Syllabi

Bachelor of Business Science Education Development Unit (EDU)

The Business Science EDU is designed to attract and retain students whose school background has not adequately prepared them for the rigours of tertiary study and who want to study in the field of management. Key elements of the programme are:

  • extending the first two years of the Business Science degree over three years to allow for students to acquire time management skills, develop good study habits and adjust to the university learning environment;
  • providing an environment in which skills development is encouraged by additional support activities such as collaborative learning workshops and extra tutorials, these are offered in addition to the normal provision;
  • providing crucial support in first year mathematics course as this is an area where it is known that students enter university with less than the requisite background;
  • language development within the microeconomics course to assist those students who are generally second language English speakers;
  • monitoring students' academic progress and providing the appropriate interventions as required for both the foundation and subsequent years of study;
  • increasing the workload each year, so that students are scheduled to graduate within five years, although completion within four years remains possible; and
  • taking students' individual needs into account the programme is flexible enough to ensure that students progress at their own pace within the specified period, but ensuring that good results are achieved.

In addition to the extended courses in Microeconomics and Introduction to Information Systems, first year EDU students take mainstream courses to ensure that they get used to the pace, develop good study habits, and learn to take responsibility for their own learning. During the third and fourth academic years students follow their particular streams within the mainstream BBusSc programmes. It is important to remember that a student who has completed the requirements for the BBusSc EDU will be awarded the same degree certificate as a student who has completed the standard BBusSc degree.
