Section of Organisational Psychology

A/Prof. Jeff Bagraim

Introduction

My research interests reflect a varied set of life, work, and organizational experiences. My initial experience of work was in a family business and a variety of community and youth organizations. I then worked as a training and development specialist in the Cape Town City Council where I also completed my professional internship prior to registering as an Industrial Psychologist. I was then offered the opportunity to join a start-up professional services firm in a consulting and managerial role. Despite enjoying the successes and challenges of corporate life, I embraced an opportunity to join the University of Cape Town towards the end of 1994.

My studies include a Business Science honours degree in psychology (with extra final year courses in economics, economic history, and personnel management), a BA Honours degree in I/O Psychology (First Class), a Masters degree in I/O Psychology (Distinction), and a PhD from the University of Warwick in the UK.

My professional affiliations include the International Association of Applied Psychology, the American Academy of Management, the South African Institute of Management Scientists, and both the American and South African societies of I/O psychology. I retain professional registration as a psychologist.

Focus areas for supervision

My primary research has been on workplace attitudes, particularly organizational commitment. I have also researched, published, and presented work on other topics such as entrepreneurial intention, corporate culture, workplace futures, and teaching methods. My current interest is on the understanding and facilitating socially sustainable work by promoting work-family and work-life enrichment.

Publications

I have selected three publications that reflect some of my research interests:

  • Gird, A., & Bagraim, J.J. (2008). The theory of planned behaviour as predictor of entrepreneurial intent amongst final year university students. South African Journal of Psychology. Accepted for publication.
  • Bagraim, J.J. & Sader, R. (2007). Family-friendly human resource practices and organizational commitment. Management Dynamics: Contemporary research, 16. In Press.
  • Schneider, M., & Bagraim, J.J. (2006, September). Commitment to organisational change: The case of information system change. Paper presented at the meeting of SAIMS, University of Stellenbosch, Cape Town
