Section of Organisational Psychology

Dr. Anton Schlechter

Introduction

In 2006 I joined UCT as a Senior Lecturer in Organisational Psychology. Before that, I was a Lecturer in the Department of Industrial Psychology at the University of Stellenbosch from 2002-2005. I was also a student of that department and completed my Honours, Masters and PhD in Industrial Psychology (specialising in Human Resource Development (HRD)) at Stellenbosch. Before beginning my studies in this field I completed a B.Sc. degree majoring in Physiology and Psychology and also an Honours degree in Psychology at Stellenbosch.

After completing my Masters in Industrial Psychology I began working at Naspers in the Media24 head office as an intern in the Organisational Development and Training department. After registration with the HPCSA I worked there as a Registered Industrial Psychologist before taking up the academic position in 2002.

Focus areas for supervision

My research interests lie in the traditional field of Organisational Behaviour, with a particular interest in leadership, talent retention and positive organisational behaviour.

Personal

I am 33 years old and was born in Cape Town. I have lived here all my life and enjoy the scenic beauty this part of the country offers. I enjoy driving and regularly take day trips in and around Cape Town. I also enjoy exploring the winelands to visit wine farms. I am a member of an invitation only wine tasting club that meets with wine makers once a month to taste and judge different wines.

I have a very keen interest in cars, particularly classic and exotic cars. I read as much about cars as I can, regularly attend car shows and am a member of the international and South Africa Mercedes-Benz club. A highlight for me was in 2005 to visit the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche factories and museums in Stuttgart, Germany. I also own a sizable collection of Mercedes-Benz model cars and memorabilia that I have collected from all over the world. I further own a 2006 Mark 3 Mazda MX5 roadster and am also a member of the South African MX5 club. This club has monthly club runs on a Sunday morning in and around the Cape Town area.

Growing up I was a Boy Scout and the love and appreciation of nature and being outdoors has stayed with me ever since. I enjoy travelling, 4x4 trips, hiking and camping. I do this as often as possible. As much as I enjoy travelling in the Northern Cape and Namibia and roughing it, I enjoy travelling overseas exploring new places, people, foods and cultures.

I enjoy attending many different types of cultural events and do this as often as possible. My music taste varies from a love for Baroque and classical music to enjoying contemporary music. I am a real peoples person and thrive on good company, interesting people and have a large group of close friends. Further I enjoy reading, watching movies and play the piano.
